Adelaide
The state of South Australia offers many unique experiences for North American travelers. The capital city, Adelaide, appeals to many North Americans because of its relaxed cosmopolitan lifestyle, which is complemented by a great range of hotels, shops and some of the best dining experiences in Australia.
Adelaide’s remarkable parklands that surround the city centre give the city a sense of spaciousness. Suburban parks, street tree canopies and private gardens provide a lush backdrop for the bustling city life. With its Mediterranean climate, compact cultural and business core and hills and beaches a mere twenty minutes away it’s the ideal place to visit throughout the year.
North Terrace is home to Adelaide’s cultural precinct. The boulevard stretches for one mile incorporating the newly upgraded Convention Centre, Old Parliament House, the Migration Museum and the South Australian Museum, which houses the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery with over 3000 artifacts on display. Visitors will enjoy the nearby South Australian Art Gallery, Botanical Gardens, National Wine Centre and the Adelaide Central Market.
Kangaroo Island
Located just off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island with its outstanding natural beauty, rare wildlife and wide range of diverse activities make it the ultimate vacation destination for lovers of the great outdoors. In addition to being home to some of the richest and most diverse flora and fauna found anywhere in the world, Kangaroo Island is also known for it’s incredible food, wine and unique locally-made products.
Over 32% of the Island is zoned as National Park, Conservation Park or Wilderness Area. In this diverse landscape, even the more casual visitor has the opportunity to see koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, sea lions, fur seals, penguins, bandicoots and goannas just to name a few. This is a spectacular place where you can find cliffs that drop steeply to roaring surf, quiet beaches, vivid blue ocean, vast tracts of eucalypt woodlands, protected coves and hidden caves. Kangaroo Island’s most famous attraction is Seal Bay Conservation Park, where a colony of around 500 Australian Sea-lions reside. Remarkably, this represents around 10% of the entire world population of this species.
Barossa Valley / Food & Wine
South Australia is synonymous with great wine. The famous Barossa Valley, only a short distance of Adelaide, is home to over 50 wineries offering cellar door tasting. The wine country is not limited to just one region in the state, with the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and the Coonawarra all offering premium wine touring. Over 60% of all Australian wines come from South Australia, so it is only fitting that Adelaide is home to the National Wine Centre of Australia.
South Australia is a haven for epicureans. The state is home to an array of local produce ranging from salmon and oysters to chocolate and pheasant pate. As well as a large concentration of restaurants and cafes in the city of Adelaide, many regional towns boast some of the finest dining experiences in Australia. Food is prepared to complement the outstanding wines and the multicultural society of South Australia strongly influences the vast styles of cuisine. Everything from outback bush tucker to Australian-influenced French and Asian fare can be found in this food and wine mecca.
Festivals & Events
South Australia hosts a myriad of events and festivals each year. Some of the more notable of these are Tasting Australia, an international food and wine festival held bi-annually, the Adelaide Festival of the Arts, the Adelaide Fringe Festival, WOMADelaide, the Barossa Vintage Festival, the Barossa Music Festival, the Adelaide Rose Festival and Jacob’s Creek Down Under, an international road cycling race.
